Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Cologne

Fragrance is such an evocative thing. It has the power to transport you straight to a forgotten memory – of a place, a time, a person. One of those such scents, for me, is Jo Malone’s Peony & Blush Suede cologne. With peony season currently in full swing, I thought I’d write a little ode to one of my favourite smells.

I first tried this scent when it was released a few years ago, shortly before some big, much-needed changes in my life. With each spritz I’m instantly reminded of positivity, excitement and newness. It’s such a comforting, addictive feeling and I don’t think I’ll ever find another scent that evokes such simple joy. I truly get such a buzz when I wear it!

Peony & Blush Suede is fresh, soft, light and feminine – it’s not sugary sweet, but delicate and sophisticated. Top notes of red apple bring a burst of crisp freshness, while heart notes of peony, jasmine, carnation and rose are soft and ever so slightly powdery. The suede base notes give the fragrance an edge, distancing itself from a regular floral.

No matter how many different fragrances I come across, I can always count on this to feel like ‘me’ again. One sniff of this and I know it’s going to be a good day. It makes me feel polished and pretty, without interfering with surroundings or overpowering everyone else in the room.

Jo Malone are big on ‘the art of fragrance combining‘ – layering colognes for more complex, bespoke scents. For warmth, Pomegranate Noir is recommended, while Grapefruit (which I have – and love – but it’s a little simple on its own) is a good one for adding extra freshness. I can imagine both of these combinations working beautifully, but I love Peony & Blush Suede so much on its own that it’s hard for me to want to experiment. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
